Epidemiology of Obesity

In contemporary society obesity is, no doubt, a serious issue. A relatively less popular sphere is the epidemiology of obesity; obesity is no longer only the problem of individuals but of whole populations and nations. What is the value of the epidemiological approach to obesity, how can it help to resolve or at least tackle this immense problem which already exists in many countries and is spreading to others as a by-product of civilisation? Epidemiology cannot do much to resolve the problem of obesity. Its main contribution is to disclose ecological and social factors which promote the development of obesity in populations, to arouse interest in its prevention and therapy and provide data which will prove the urgent need for action.
